Every couple of days I get a call from a now recognizable number with an automated announcement letting me know that my ‘requested item is available for pick up at my neighborhood NY public library.’ The computerized voice fails to tell me however, what the item is and so if the call finds me uptown, unable to get downtown in a timely fashion then I spend the next few hours wondering which surprise item it is (I have books, DVDs and books on tape in transit) and if it’s one I really want or just one I sort of want.

Today I picked up the following requested item:

I of course, requested this book weeks ago and when I was told I was 1,000-something on the waiting list I borrowed a copy from an uptown friend. I love how the you can tell the book has, in the last couple of months, been in hundreds of hands and in hundreds of apartments all across NYC. It’s crazy to think about the life of a book, the coffee stain on page 312 that happened in some nameless Tribeca cafe or page 73, dogged down by a interrupted, Pelham Bay Park bound subway rider. I feel only slightly bad for actually checking the book out since I have already read it and I’m sure there are plenty others still waiting. I’ll only keep it for a few days. I couldn’t resist adding my hands and my apartment to the life of this uber popularized New York Public Library book.

I love the Young Adult (YA) sticker. No doubt that this particular book has seen more than the average book’s fair share of young girl’s bedrooms and perhaps locker shelves but whose to say that’s wrong? In fact, it’s right.

(I’ll writer more later on books that I read as a young girl.)

hyperrealism

It’s 2 am-I am still awake (times clearly change), my dog is sound asleep and my nose is running. Common cold, I hope. Flu, I fear.

I absolutely love them, in fact, I don’t think I could love a couple more. Not a real life couple at least. What awfulness is happening on the court that makes J and B turn up their pretty faces like that? And, what happened to the kid behind Hov with the black eye and busted lip?

“The publishing world is very resistant to change. But there are always people — mostly the young and the hungry — who are trying new things. The days of just holing up and writing in solitude are gone. Today, you can’t be a successful writer without having a little Barnum in your bones.”

-Brad Meltzer, author of The Book of Lies.

I’ve been watching MSNBC in massive amounts. I’ve never really watched it before as I’m more of a CNN girl, or to be truthful, the Internet is my real go to (especially now that I’m cableless). But anyway, Lola and Emmie’s mom has MSNBC on 24-7, usually on more than one TV at a time. In any event, I literally have watched HardBall (with Chris Matthews), Countdown (with Keith Olbermann) and The Rachel Maddow Show every night for the last three weeks. I love it; maybe because it’s such a politically exciting time or because they lean left, or simply because they make it funny and before you know it you’re smiling. You’re smiling, even laughing perhaps.

snow day

January 28, 2009

This is funny and true. Plus, I so love our new president. Washington DC seems to handle snow days like North Carolina–overly cautious.

I had two shoots today, babysat all night and have an interview in the morning.

At least I’m not bored.

I applied for a totally realistic, totally paying(!), totally awesome job. Send good vibes because I could use them.

you wench

January 26, 2009

I just applied to be a ‘night writer” five days a week from 9:30 pm to 3 am. While they kindly call it ‘night writer’ I think it’s more of a ‘survey writer’ gig. Still, it’s money.
